Annual Report 2011 NATIONAL DEAF DAY Several activities market the 12° Encontro Comemorativo ao Dia do Surdo (12th Celebration of the Day of the Deaf), promoted by Centro de Educação para Surdos Rio Branco, which celebrated the achievements and potentials of deaf people in several areas. In the art field, the school’s drama club presented the play “The Addams Family” and the dance group performed a number with cloths, about corporal expression. The group Corpo Sinalizante (Signing Body), from the Museu de Arte Moderna (MAM), which researches and produces art related to Libras - Brazilian Sign Language, presented the videos ‘Corpo Nossa Língua’ (The Body, Our Language) and ‘Escola de Libras’ (Libras School), which deal, Several presentations were performed during the meeting respectively, with school experiences of deaf children and the importance of learning Libras. DISTANCE LEARNING The Centro de Educação para Surdos Rio Branco developed along with the Ensino a Distância Rio Branco, in experimental character, a project of long distance teaching of basic notions of Libras - Brazilian Sign Language. The course will serve all of those interested in learning this language, by means of advanced teaching resources. ADDITIONAL ACTIVITIES Workshops Reading A Book Club was founded with the purpose of stimulating fondness for reading and writing in Portuguese, which is the second language of the students of the Centro de Educação para Surdos Rio Branco. The Book Club runs in the Library and every week it suggests readings, according to age groups and themes, in order to awaken the student’s interest, who write small reports on the books read. The activity encourages communicating ideas with classmates in Libras - Brazilian Sign Language and writing in Portuguese. The reports are put up in the library’s mural. Workshop stimulated the reading habit Sensory Paintings The Oficina de Pinturas Sensoriais (Sensory Painting Workshop), offered to children from 0 to 3 years of the Programa de Estimulação do Desenvolviment (Development Stimulation Program) and Kindergarten and 1st grade classes, was a moment of experimenting with painting and free using different materials. The aim of the activity was for the children to perceive the different textures that can make up a surface, by using paint, sand, glue and flour and awakening the pleasure of making art. Sensory Painting Workshops stimulated the students Participation in the Signs in Art Week - MAM Students from Basic Education and the Elementary School took part in the Signs in Museum Art Week, promoted by the Museu de Arte Moderna (MAM) to celebrate the National Day of the Deaf. Conducted by a deaf educator, children visited the Museum and the Sculpture Garden, in addition to participating in story-telling and recreational activities. The Centro de Educação para Surdos Rio Branco has a partnership with MAM, helping that institution improve its project of training young deaf educators, allowing to expand the museum’s accessibility to the deaf.
