FAMILY RELATIONSHIPS Beginning of the School Year The school year at the Centro de Educação para Surdos Rio Branco began with a warming welcome meeting, during which the director Sabine Vergamini heard the families expectations and pointed out the main aspects of the education offered by the school. The parents were invited to take part in a group activity that illustrated the strength of union, interaction and cooperation, leading them to reflect on the importance of their participation in their children’s school progress. The Meeting promoted the relationship between Mother’s Day the school and the students’ parents During the Mothers’ Day celebratory dinner, held at Rotary Club Jardim das Bandeiras, the director of the Centro de Educação para Surdos Rio Branco, Sabine Vergamini, gave a lecture about the school’s educational mission. After reflecting on the importance to tend to the needs of deaf children, from the very early years, the director spoke of the family’s decisive role in the development of deaf children, and closed her speech with a video made by students from the school in honor of Mothers’ Day. The collective work was given to all mothers on their day and presents statements from the children in Libras - Brazilian Sign Language and in Portuguese (written) on how they feel about them and how they see them in their tastes, dreams and behavior. TALENTS II School Film Festival The documentary “Sinais do Amor” (Love Signs), produced by the Centro de Educação para Surdos Rio Branco was first place in the “Teacher” category (films produced and directed by teachers) in the II Festival de Vídeo nas Escolas, jointly promoted by the Sindicato dos Professores de São Paulo – Sinpro (São Paulo Teachers Union), Cine Olido (a movie theater), Programa Nas Ondas do Rádio ( a Radio programm), Secretaria Municipal de Educação (City Libras - Brazilian Sign Language and of access to a school Secretariat of Education) and Associação Cultural Kinoforum that caters to the actual needs of deaf children. A jury panel ( a Cultural Association). “Sinais do Amor” speaks of the made up of students and teachers from public and private families experience with deafness, from the moment it is schools, from several grades, evaluated the films according discovered. It reports the different stances taken by parents to originality of the idea, photography and sound quality regarding this issue, focusing on the importance of learning and fluidity of the narration. 43rd Periquito Judo Tournament Guilherme Nobilo, 3rd year student of the Centro de Educação para Surdos Rio Branco, won 1st place in the 43° Torneio Periquito de Judô in the category sub 11 half middleweight. This traditional tournament, held by Sociedade Esportiva Palmeiras (Palmeiras Sports Society) and organized jointly with the Federação Paulista de Judô (São Paulo Judo Federation), gathered athletes from all over Brazil. 79
